On 1 January 2024, I visited the Aeon supermarket in Yagoto, Showa Ward, Nagoya.
Aeon is the largest supermarket chain in Japan. Until around the time I was in high school, most of shops in Japan used to close for three days during the New Year, but nowadays some of the stores are open on New Year’s Day.
Yagoto AEON is located in front of Kosho-ji Temple, which was the family temple of the Owari Tokugawa family, so people who had finished their new year’s first visit to the temple would also come to AEON.

2.Starbucks on the second basement floor
There is a Starbucks on the second basement floor. It was built four or five years ago and is used daily by students as a stylish library because it is fashionable, serves good coffee and has electricity.
3.The first basement floor is the grocery store.
As it is customary to have a family meal at New Year, the shop is full of sushi and hors d’oeuvres for large groups.
The bento section sells ekiben from all over the country. In the past, people often ate lunch on the train during long journeys, and each station sold bento boxes made from local ingredients, which appealed to enthusiasts. Nowadays, however, as trains have become faster and you can usually get anywhere in Japan in no time, ekiben are not often sold on trains. Rather, ekiben survive in souvenir shops as one of the souvenirs that express regional characteristics. Ekiben are not usually sold in supermarkets, but for people returning to their parents’ homes in Nagoya from all over the country for New Year’s Day, speciality ekiben from different regions were sold.
4.A wide selection of tofu and natto.
People in Europe and America may know about tofu and natto, but they don’t often see them sold in such large quantities. Tofu and natto are very popular in Japan and there is a wide variety of tofu and natto to choose from to suit different cuisines.
5.Bakery in a corner of the food section
There is also a bakery in the corner of the grocery store. The freshly baked bread is delicious.
6. Baskin-Robbins (Japanese name: 31 Ice Cream) on the ground floor.
On the ground floor is Thirty-One Ice Cream. The ice cream originates from the USA and is very popular in Japan.
7.UNIQLO and MUJI on the third floor
On the third floor are UNIQLO and MUJI, both popular. They are particularly popular with university students because they are simple, stylish and reasonably priced.
