If you are interested in a foreign country, you may be very curious about what ordinary people in that country eat on a daily basis.
For example, there are many French restaurants in Nagoya, but I prefer to watch channels on YouTube that show what ordinary French people eat in their homes.
So today I’m going to show you my dinner.
１．the biggest holiday in Japan is New Year’s Day.
I think the biggest holiday in Europe and America is Christmas, but in Japan, work is usually done on Christmas Day. Schools are closed for the winter holidays, so students usually don’t come to school, but students who got bad grades in their final exams have to take a re-test at this time.
In that sense, Christmas is just a festive period, but New Year’s Day is considered to be a period when the whole family spends time together.
It is common for children who are already married and living far away to gather at the home of their elderly parents, where they all have a meal together. That’s why it’s in the news at this time of year that the bullet trains and other transport services are full and there are heavy traffic jams on the highways.
２．today I want to eat something much more concise than usual.
Comparatively speaking, I am always careful about what I eat and try to eat ‘healthy food’ rather than ‘tasty food’.
I like muscle training, so I eat only chicken breast on a daily basis, but as I did not go to the gym today, I decided to eat simple food.
３．mackerel sandwich
When I visited Istanbul, Turkey, a long time ago, I ate a mackerel sandwich.
Later I was told that locals don’t eat mackerel sandwiches and that it was a tourist dish, but today, with my memories of Turkey, I decided on a mackerel sandwich.
Mackerel was boiled.
The bread was lightly browned in a frying pan so it was crispy.
I used Chinese fermented [salted] black beans, although I did not know how to season them.
This wasn’t enough, so I also made a sandwich with a fried egg.
Finally, I bit into an apple with the whole peel and that was the end of it for today.
Phew, I’m happy. That was the last dinner on 31 December.
