7/1/2024 January Botanical Garden①

I tried to go to the Higashiyama Botanical Garden as usual to see the plants in January, but the botanical garden gate was closed for construction.

So I had to enter through the gate of the zoo, which is attached to the botanical garden. The Higashiyama Zoo is vast and extremely popular, so I usually don’t use it because I get tired before getting to the Botanical Garden.

However, in January it was cold and the zoo was empty, especially in the morning.

６－８　Entering from the zoo, the first part of the botanical garden is the Rose Gate. Many roses are planted there, but now, of course, there are only stumps.

This part of the garden is not usually visited, but it is planted with plants from Oceania.

Oceania plants are very popular in Japanese horticulture these days.
However, I hear that plants from the drier regions of Oceania are popular and do not suit Japan’s humid climate, and many people let them die. Among these, plants such as Banksia and Grevillea may be easy to grow.
The unique shape of the flowers may attract the attention of visitors to the garden. (Although, only those interested in plants will notice them. Ha ha ha)
