2023/12/7 Japanese Sweet Potato

In autumn, many shops in Japan start selling sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes can be used as a sweet treat, but by far the most popular sweet potato in Japan is the baked sweet potato.
The whole potato is usually baked on a hot stone or in an oven.

I have heard that sweet potatoes are also found in the USA and Europe. However, many Japanese people say that the sweet potatoes sold in Europe and other countries taste completely different from the Japanese sweet potatoes.

Japanese sweet potatoes, especially baked ones, are very sweet!
This time, the baked sweet potato I bought had a sugar content of 46.
But the baked sweet potato made from the sweetest type of sweet potato, ‘Beniharuka’, has a maximum sugar content of 79, which is incredibly sweet.

For comparison, grapes are considered sweet at 18-20.

”The reason I bought the baked sweet potato this time was because someone at work was eating it and I wanted to try it myself.

I didn’t even go to the gym that day, I just went to a new baked potato shop near my house and lo and behold! It was closed that day.

I was really curious, so today I bought some at a supermarket near where I work.

I am very pleased with the mess!

In Europe or America you cannot eat it because the species is different from the Japanese sweet potato.
